Picking Up the Litter Lout Bill…

August 19th, 2010

The cost of cleaning up litter from England’s streets was £858million last year, Keep Britain Tidy has recently reported.

The organisation pointed to Government figures to show that councils’ bills for removing rubbish like food wrappers and cigarette butts from April 2008 to March 2009 were 10% up on the previous financial year.

And chief executive Phil Barton blasted the £78million rise – from £780million in 2007-2008 – as “obscene”.

Keep Britain Tidy is launching a campaign with local authorities to urge the public to help keep areas clean by picking up empty drinks cans or crisp packets and putting them in bins.

Mr Barton said:”There seems to be an attitude of ‘It’s only one cigarette end’ or ‘It’s only one burger wrapper’.

“But…

Ernie, the brightest bin man in town

August 14th, 2010

A pensioner has proved that it is never too late to enter higher education after completing a research degree in waste management at The University of Northampton.

Ernie Sharp, aged 88, who left school without any formal qualifications, joined hundreds of students, most more than 50 years younger than him, at a graduation ceremony yesterday.

Mr Sharp, who lives in London, completed a distance learning course which enabled him to send in his research via email but he also attended seminars in Northampton with other students during his two-year research project.

He said: “I’m very pleased with myself. I enjoyed doing the research degree. It was refreshing and encouraging and I learnt so much.

“It was a completely new experience for me to…

Menzies – who owns Fair City Skip Hire – is alleged to have been concerned in the supply of mephedrone, which is also known as meow meow, M-Cat and Bubbles.

He appeared on petition at Perth Sheriff Court and faced a charge of being concerned in the supply of the recently reclassified drug from the skip firm’s HQ in Friarton Road, Perth.

He faced a second charge of being concerned in the supply of cocaine from the…

Back to the Workfloor for Viridor Boss.

August 4th, 2010

The chief executive of one of the UK’s biggest waste, recycling and renewable energy companies goes undercover at his own company as part of a new Channel 4 series.

Colin Drummond, Viridor chief executive officer, is one of a handful of bosses in a Channel 4’s Undercover Boss, which sees senior figures return to the front lines incognito to see how their operations really work.

He said: “This experience has been a real eye opener for me both professionally and personally.

“It’s exposed me to some of the things that we do really well, some of the things that we need to work on, and given me a full, rounded view of how the company works on a day…

On Yer Bike!

August 2nd, 2010

We were always under the impression that taking stuff out of skips for re-use was OK in the eyes of the law – it’s just other people’s rubbish, right?

Well…this certainly isn’t the case for a poor jobless man who was arrested and charged after he took two old bicycle frames out of a skip.
Kevin Gilligan, 48, thought they had been thrown away and did not belong to anyone, said his solicitor Sally Howard.
But items in a skip belong either to the person who put them there, or to the owner of the skip.
Steven Ovenden, of the Crown Prosecution Service, said the cycle frames had been returned to their owner, the National Railway Museum, and presumably been…
